What does personal transformation or spirituality have to do with my business? Everything.
The personal transformation movement is a wave that is beginning to touch every aspect of our lives. People are actively seeking the awareness and fulfillment they find in the teachings of people like Gay Hendricks and Byron Katie, in programs like the Landmark Forum and in practices like yoga and meditation. In fact, the ‘spirituality movement’ is heralded as today’s greatest megatrend by Patricia Aburdene in Megatrends 2010.
The spill-over of spirituality (or personal transformation, if you prefer) from the personal sphere into the organizational/business sphere is resulting in unexpected challenges.
While you might expect that it would mean good things for business, the fact is that it really means transformation for business. And unless you know how to make the right change, the right way, your business will continue to struggle with finding its way.
And every business needs to understand what that means for them.
Here’s what’s even trickier – there isn’t a formula for business transformation. In fact, this is such a new concept most organizations don’t even know it’s happening.
Caveat: If the word spirituality is daunting for you, then substitute greatness, personal worth, transformation or value-consciousness.
How can you know if the challenges you are facing are a sign your business needs to make transformational change?
- When you use this statement, or something like it: “This is a result of the economy or economic pressures and will get better when the market does.”
- When you see revenues or profits dropping with out a clear explanation for what caused the shift.
- When you experience a steady decline in customer or employee satisfaction, after a history of good satisfaction.
- When your organization experiences a crisis, that should have been avoidable, but came on all of a sudden.
- When you have implemented practices that historically are well received and lead to strong success but this time they didn’t.
- When you have higher than usual turnover and a harder time than usual hiring good employees.
- If your business is about creativity, innovation and encourages progressive thinking.

Businesses that have made changes based on ‘who they want to BE’, that do structure their processes and systems in ways that support the principles of individual worth, or that directly integrate spirituality support programs are thriving and successful. And are growing stronger to weather future marketplace challenges.
Major corporations like 3M, Starbucks, and Zappos are making these changes. And the small business owners I have worked with are integrating this new way of being a business. To their benefit.
